ON PLAYING SMALL

I just wrapped up a 12 week mastermind course all about self-awareness. 12 weeks of reworking thought patterns, removing mental blocks and essentially digging into why I am the way I am. 12 weeks of getting to know myself on a level I didn’t even know existed. Talk about peeling back the onion…

Turns out this self-development work is not for the faint of heart. It takes grit and determination, patience and vulnerability. It’s not uncommon to want to quit and revert to the old you, the safe you, the surface level you. In the world of self-development, we call this “playing small.” Settling in relationships, not having/voicing boundaries, chickening out on the thing we KNOW God put us here to do, living the same way we were living five years ago because we’re too paralyzed by fear to enter the next level of our lives. Guilty?

When we step away from playing small and let fear fall to the wayside, magic happens. When we start living fully and authenticity, we attract people who are doing the same. People who are passionate and who will challenge us. The game changers, the difference makers, the keep-you-on-your-toes partners, the won’t-ever-let-you-slip lovers, the I-got-your-back-no-matter-what friendships, the relationships and opportunities that shock our nervous system and jolt us awake.

Here’s the thing though... you won’t find these people/opportunities when you’re playing small. You won’t find them by not speaking your truth, not asking for what you need, or not honoring your boundaries. And you can’t do any of that if you don’t know who the heck you are.

I challenge you to go into 2019 with your heart wide open. Ask yourself the hard questions. What are you scared of? Why haven’t you taken the leap? Where are you playing small? In love? Your career? Your boundaries? Your mental-health? Trust me when I say that self-awareness is knowledge and a steady voice is gold.
